Headstrong is the eponymous debut release and sole album of the band of the same name. It was released on RCA Records in 2002 and proved to be the group's only album before disbanding the following year. The band chose Dan Brodbeck, the same man behind their demo, to produce the album in their hometown of London, Ontario, features one single in Adriana, which reached 15 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and had a music video. Its style features elements of hip hop and funk

No matter how many times I listen to this... (both sides, although I do have a favourite), I'm totally blown away by it. The definition of timeless house music. I will listen to these tracks again and again and again. Huge, huge respect to Psychotropic who went on to deliver more amazing music for us wide-eyed youngsters (now mid 40s).. you had the magic formula!!

On this 44th birthday of mine (today), I look back at my days in college in Vermont, spinning at a small (but surprisingly hip) club....getting this 12" in was a true defining moment. I can honestly say that this track 'twisted my melon', made me fall in love, and started my true obsession with house music. To this I say, thank you Dj Face and Nicely!

I just had to comment on this release, possibly two of the greatest tunes from the old skool era in my opinion whilst at the same time not being the most complex tracks by any means, making the effect they have on me even more impressive.

Beginning with the A side, Only For The Headstrong is in fact not a tough track, but in saying that I'm not knocking it at all. A beautifully mellow, psychedelic tune, with a dreamy synth line that washes in and out over a breakbeat and sombre but rough bassline. As people have pointed out before, the structure of the track is quite simple, but the production and fading techniques create the feeling of being immersed in a vivid dream, making the track far more powerful when played to its fullest, and above all one of the best pieces of tranquil hardcore I have had the pleasure of hearing. The B side follows a similar approach, but to create the opposite effect, this time with the use of dark, haunting stabs fading in and out and a warped funk sample to create more of an atmospheric nightmare.

An essential release for anyone who enjoys the earlier end of hardcore techno or '91 breakbeat hardcore. As much as these tracks are dated and simple in structure, the atmosphere they create is just remarkable for both home listening and the dancefloor alike. Psychotropic's later "Hypnosis" creates a similar effect, but this release is the ultimate one which puts their 'hypnotic' structures and melancholy melodies together.

The 'out of your head mix' has had me obsessed since i heard it at a perception rave in bristol at the end of 1990.

This record simply has no flaws--from its 'washing machine' bassline intro to the ripping breakbeat vs. prince guitar lick, and when it drops into the almost 'generic' psychotropic organ riff (with more space than notes--the reverb on that organ gives it such a MASSIVE warehouse feel)you know this shits THE REAL DEAL.
Only for the headstrong is a solid house track--but this cut is pure dancefloor ripping space music.

A total underground warehouse anthem, and right up there with robin wants revenge's 'well fraklie my son'(but better)

I have listened to this track 1000 times, and i will probably listen to it 1000 more--if you want a REAL feel of what the summer of 1990 was like FIND THIS RECORD.

I have to agree that this is a timeless masterpiece. When It
came out, I was working at Dance Tracks in NYC, and I immediately dug it and bought one. Since I've been hanging out at David Mancuso's Loft parties for the past 20 years, I lent him my copy. It was an instant hit there, making it a
bona fide "Loft Classic", and one of the most important samples it incorporates wasn't mentioned in the first review here: "Music's hyptotizin" is the acapella intro to the underground Disco/Funk classic "Do It to the Music" by Raw Silk on West End Records, which has been in and out of print for years and is currently "in print" on vinyl from the label. Train spotters and history buffs should do themselves a favor and pick up or at least listen to the original Raw Silk classic.

This track makes very good use of James Brown's, famous 'Funky Drummer' as the backbeat, creating an extremely funky, breakbeat house ditty. The famous break has had some added bass production on the underlying kicks, a really funky, tough, analogue bassline, and warm jazz-house organ/keyboard work, Modulated in places (not too much though), with nice futuristic/moog synthesizer style sweeps, rolling through for a funky, summer vibe, laidback rave classic - 1990 stylee.

'Out Of Your Head Mix' uses the same instruments as track A (same synth sounds etc), except the melodies differ, the
ringing, guitar riff taken from Prince's/Kiss is sampled and morphed over a tougher, 'Fool's Gold' drum break, the same sample used in Congress-40 Miles, Nebula II's Seance and numerous other releases.

This record oozes funk throughout, and is very original for that period in time, not in it's samples, but its arrangement and synth sounds.
