Sergei Prokofiev wrote his Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major Op. 100 in Soviet Russia in one month in the summer of 1944. Fourteen years had passed since Prokofiev wrote the first version of his Symphony No. 4 in C. World War II was still raging during the symphony's gestation, and Prokofiev composed it in the Soviet Union. He gave out in a statement at the time that he intended it as a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit. Album 2008 9 Songs. One of Prokofiev's most accessible pieces, Symphony No. 5 expresses optimism and a depth of direct emotion. It had been 14 years since the Symphony No 4 but his return to Russia in 1934 and the subsequent war years heralded a new creative period. Lieutenant Kij Suite, a cinema piece, was written for Alexander Feinzimmer's 1934 film based on a satirical story by Yuri Tinyanov and mirrors the mischievousness of the script about a make-believe military character. 2008 is another very busy year for Maestro Jarvi.
