Someday My Prince Will Come is the seventh studio album by Miles Davis for Columbia Records, catalogue CL 1656 and CS 8456 in stereo, released in 1961. Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in Manhattan, New York City, it marked the only Miles Davis Quintet studio recording session to feature saxophonist Hank Mobley. Keeping to his standard procedure at Columbia to date of alternating small group records and big band studio projects with Gil Evans, Davis followed up Sketches of Spain with an album. A primary consideration of these fruitful sessions is the caliber of musicians - Miles Davis trumpet, Red Garland piano, John Coltrane tenor sax, and Philly Joe Jones drums - who were basically doing their stage act in the studio. As actively performing musicians, the material they are most intimate with would be their live repertoire. He can be the new Duke Ellington of our time if he just keeps at it, he wrote in the book. Prince is from the school of James Brown, and I love James Brown because of all the great rhythms he plays, he continued. But Prince got some Marvin Gaye and Jimi Hendrix and Sly in him, also, even Little Richard. Darryl Jones, who played bass with Miles Davis before joining the Rolling Stones, told Pitchfork: Miles was listening to a lot of Prince at the time we were recording 1984s Decoy and 1985s Youre Under Arrest. Miles was pretty fascinated with him.
