Album

Third is the third studio album by English electronic music band Portishead. It was released on 28 April 2008 in the United Kingdom by Island Records and a day later in the United States by Mercury Records. Portishead's first studio album in eleven years, it moved away from the trip hop style they had popularised, incorporating influences such as krautrock, surf rock, doo wop, and the film soundtracks of John Carpenter. Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it, particularly in America. Taking their cue from the slow, free to Portishead Third Silence, Hunter and more. 11 tracks 49:11. Third is the third studio album by English musical group Portishead, released on April 28, 2008 on Island Records in the UK and on April 29, 2008 on Mercury Records in the US. It represents a departure from their previous trip hop sound into a darker, rawer, more industrial style. It is their first release in 10 years, and their first studio album in 11 years. Equalling the performance of their first two studio albums in their native United Kingdom, Third entered the UK Album Chart at 2, and became the band'. Released April 28, 2008. Third Tracklist. Silence Lyrics. As radical reinventions go, Third- the first Portishead studio album since 1997- is surprisingly natural. Darker and bleaker lyrically than their previous work, Third is a sort of re-debut- the band's sound after it has excised every possible remnant of trip-hop from it. Can an album really be a departure if it's the first thing a group's released in 11 years . Portishead - Third review: A charm. The interesting thing about Third, of course, is that Portishead are one of the few bands who actually COULD get away with releasing the same album again. Were Third to be Dummy II - Dummy Harder, would anybody mind After all, that album came out in 1994, and it's been 11 years since any new material of any kind emerged from the minds of Messrs. Barrow, Utley, and Gibbon. Portishead's third album is initially more a record to admire than to love, its muscular synthesisers, drum breaks and abrupt endings keeping the tension high. But after several listens, Third's majesty unfurls. Full Review. This could have been a witty, self-deprecating disclaimer, warning of typical third album creative bankruptcy. Instead it provides fair warning that Third is the most stunning, stark and superb Portishead album yet. Third is the 2008 album from Portishead. They are a trip-hop group from Bristol, England, named after the nearby town of the same name. 11 tracks. Portishead's Third has been a long time coming, the result of a lengthy creative torpor following 1997's dark, distinctly underrated album Portishead. Importantly, though, they've shaken it. While the core trio of Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley remains, this is quite a different band to Portishead's 90s incarnation: gone is the slo-mo turntable scratching and smoky jazz feel, replaced by heavy, brooding. by Michael Roffman. on April 29, 2008, 1:39am. third album would be anyones guess. On first listen, however, Third plays in a dreary, sleepy fashion, grinding out apocalyptic hymns that seem moreover battle cries than poetic paintings. To use a weak source of imagery, this is a record Thom Yorke might fall asleep to at night with a twisted, gaping snarl. Threads runs on reverb and insomniac drumming, which is a sleek platform for vocalist Beth Gibbons to work off of, closing the album in a cinematic catastrophe
