This is PiL is the ninth studio album by British rock band Public Image Ltd. Their first studio album in 20 years, it was released on 28 May 2012 on band's own label, PiL Official. Public Image Ltd returned in 2009, after a 17-year hiatus. John Lydon financed the reunion using money he earned doing a UK TV commercial for Country Life butter. PiL over sluggish backing, it's also hard to tell whether or not they're taking the piss- as on 1985's marketing send-up Album- or if Lydon is ill-advisedly trying to re-establish himself. Either way, once that intro is out of the way, his band suddenly sounds hungry, alive, and passionate. There's a lot of fury on This Is PiL, though some of it rings hollow The Room I Am In takes ham-fisted potshots at UK council housing but comes off confused and rambling, with one of Lydon's more ridiculous vocal performances. Meanwhile, the venom on Fool. But This Is PiL proves that the taunting weaponry of his voice is still a delight, as he drawls out syllables like an over-the-top TV villain. It's tough to sharpen a rusty tool, and Lydon's lyrics are often overshadowed by Lu Edmonds' piercing guitar drones. But a few songs are crisply antagonistic, especially One Drop amid a shuffling reggae backbeat, Lydon crows, You cannot change us, once again finding inspiration in defiance. Playing that material seems to have affected the sound of This Is PiL, though it is no attempt at replication. It's more like a stylistic evolution - one that's easier on the average set of ears than the droning dread of the first album's Theme or the mangled dub of Metal Box's Poptones.
