The Story of the Ghost is the seventh studio album by American rock band Phish, released by Elektra Records on October 27, 1998. The album features an emphasis on the jazz-funk influenced cow-funk style, which the group had been experimenting with in concert throughout 1997 and 1998. The album's first single was Birds of a Feather, which was a Top 20 hit on Billboard magazine's Adult Alternative Songs chart. Album 1998 14 Songs. Rock 1998. Birds of a Feather. Story consists of fourteen relatively concise snippets culled from hours of studio workouts. There are hints of funk and jazz that never quite morph into either. Thats no great loss, because the foursome has always sounded a bit clumsy when it has tried to swing. On these tunes, Phishs fluid interplay is the primary attraction. But the soul of Story reveals itself during the albums second half, where simplicity, directness and brevity prevail. Limb by Limb layers voices into a call-and-response dialogue with a hint of reggae in the simmering syncopations. Album Notes. Despite some good songs the opening story-setting Ghost, the groovy Birds of a Feather, the strolling Guyute in a typically tuneless batch, The Story of the Ghost is occasionally sloppy, a bit smug, and often quite boring.
