Album

Solo Piano 1989 is an album of piano music composed and performed by Philip Glass. It was produced by Kurt Munkacsi. The title of five of the seven tracks, Metamorphosis, refers to and was inspired by the 1915 novella The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. While all pieces were written in 1988, some were written for a staging of Metamorphosis, while others were for the 1988 documentary film The Thin Blue Line directed by Errol Morris. Mad Rush was written in 1979 and is based on an earlier organ. To Philip Glass, piano music is something intimate. It was no accident that his first CBS album, Glassworks, which was designed as an introduction to his music, began with solo piano. Though Glass characterizes much of the music on this recording as romantic, his performances are not in the virtuoso concert-hall tradition of Liszt or Rachmaninoff. Glass has had a long history of performing his own music, being among the first of a new generation of compos. Here, Glass' connection to the established classical tradition is most evident. Though his pieces are minimal subtly altered repeated patterns or melodic motifs, yet they have an unsentimental beauty and heartfelt grace that one would hear in J. Bach's English Suites, as well as the piano music of Chopin and Erik Satie. Portions of the suite 'Metamorphosis' are based on Glass' score for THE THIN. I was so struck by its beauty and drama that I couldn't wait for it to be over so the announcer would tell me what I was listening to I went home and ordered the album immediately. I was already familiar with some Philip Glass operas, but i had no idea he was such a brilliant pianist and composer for the piano. Read more. 6 people found this helpful.
