"Experimental Africa" is a musical composition soundscape which was used as a "live soundtrack" for "Colors", a traveling exhibition of African art which opened in 1996 in Berlin (and was originally presented by Nelson Mandela). The Music itself is an evocative and densely layered collection of African environmental and animal sounds combined with tribal rhythms, sparse musical elements and textural effects. The recording teems with a palpable sense of deep mystery and primal energy, as the listener is transported to a place where beauty and danger coexist.
The artist, Peter Busboom, used and assortment of authentic African (Kenyan) percussion and drums (some which contained the skins of animals native to the region) as well as real and sampled instruments (kalimba, didgeridoo) and electronic keyboards. By turns powerful and haunting, the kinetic (and, at times, thunderous) rhythms and swirling music are interwoven with the sound effects in such a way that they seem to all exist on one sonic continuum. In essence, the music (which was looped for continuous playback during the exhibit) served as a way for visitors to "journey" to Africa while viewing the work of South African photographers, as well as wooden sculptures from the former homeland Venda in northern Transvaal and the original Shack from Pat Mautloas.
