Album

Basra is the debut album by American drummer Pete La Roca, recorded in 1965 and released on the Blue Note label. All compositions by Pete La Roca except as noted. Malagueña Ernesto Lecuona - 9:01. Candu - 6:45. Tears Come from Heaven - 5:00. It is strange to realize that drummer Pete La Roca only led two albums during the prime years of his career, for this CD reissue of his initial date is a classic. La Roca's three originals Basra, which holds one's interest despite staying on one chord throughout, the blues Candu, and the complex Tears Come From Heaven are stimulating but it is the other three songs that really bring out the best playing in the quartet which is comprised of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Steve Kuhn, and bassist. Pete La Roca was born Pete Sims in 1938 and in his early years as a professional musician played timbales in Latin bands, a period that gave him the name La Roca the Rock and a distinctive style that manifested itself in his drum set accompaniment and solos in later years. His first major gig was with Sonny Rollins to who he was introduced by Max Roach, playing live with the master saxophonist between 1957 and 1959. A sole album with La Roca survives from that period, the 1958 Blue Note album A Night at the Village Vanguard. From the afternoon set, A Night In Tunisia is a good example of La Roca. This album is a stone cold classic that was never repeated, totally amazing from start to finish.Joe Henderson and Pete La Roca redefine what can be achieved musically on the track Basra you may wonder if the saxophone is playing Joe Henderson and not the other way around and then you get Pete La Roca's drum solo [outstanding], Malaguena is played to standards not heard before making it a tour de force, but that's just the hard hitting tracks when the group play melodies and harmonize on the rest of the album, On Lazy afternoon you become aware of the breath taking beauty of the pictures these players depict, please do yourself a favour and listen carefully because very few albums were ever made like this.
I could not agree more, it's a magical album with some insanely brilliant musicianship.
