It was released in January 1978, through record label Blank Records, a short-lived Mercury Records subsidiary founded by Cliff Burnstein, now better known for managing superstar acts like Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Modern Dance. There isn't a Pere Ubu recording you can imagine living without. The Modern Dance remains the essential Ubu purchase as does the follow-up, Dub Housing. For sure, Mercury had no idea what they had on their hands when they released this as part of their punk rock offshoot label Blank, but it remains a classic slice of art-punk. It announces itself quite boldly: the first sound you hear is a painfully high-pitched whine of feedback, but then Tom Herman's postmodern Chuck Berry riffing kicks off the brilliant Non-Alignment Pact, and you soon realize that this is punk rock. Review Summary: Pere Ubu is born, and so avant-garde gets a good start with the landmark. Overlooked is a term which is very easily used but in some cases don't fully describe the item its being called. Take for example the hoards of people who call Loveless overlooked. This would be more true if My Bloody Valentine weren't signed to big shot label, Warner Brothers. Another release that gets the overlooked nod is The Velvet Underground's Velvet Underground and Nico but when you actually show the people its cover you will probably get a response of oh the bana.
