Upon Azure Rays break-up, Orenda Fink released her first solo album, 2005s Invisible Ones, and began work with Art In Manila, whose debut album hit in 2007. It looked as if she was on a Ryan Adams-like tear. But the flood of activity has since come out in trickles. In early 2009, she released a debut album with her long-running OS recording partnership with Scalpelist Cedric Lemoyne of Remy Zero and later in the year answered her solo career silence with the brilliant Ask the Night, her most simple and rustic album to date. This is a stripped-down album, devoid of computers and electronics of any kind, and Fink uses the opportunity to flex her muscles as a competent Southern Gothic-styled songwriter. Flanked by little more than her guitar, vocal harmonies, and a sparse Appalachian string band, she steers her voice through tales of Greyhound bus rides, the South, and swampy landscapes. Background information. Fink also released Ask the Night, on Saddle Creek Records on October 6, 2009, which Pitchfork called more austere and rustic with intricate soundscapes. The single Higher Ground features guest vocals by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. The song Why is The Night Sad was later played by Azure Ray at their reunion show in Los Angeles in 2008. Fink began recording her third solo album in December 2013. Collaborating on the album was her dream team of Ben Brodin, husband Todd Fink and Bill Rieflin.
