Niels Wilhelm Gade 22 February 1817 21 December 1890 was a Danish composer, conductor, violinist, organist and teacher. He is considered the most important Danish musician of his day. Gade was born in Copenhagen, the son of a joiner and instrument maker. He began his career as a violinist with the Royal Danish Orchestra, which premiered his concert overture Efterklange af Ossian Echoes of Ossian in 1841. When his first symphony was turned down for performance in Copenhagen, he sent it to Felix. I think Gade has not received his due in recent years despite excellent recordings of his symphonies from Jarvi on BIS or the late Christopher Hogwood on Chandos. Niels Gade was joint director of the Copenhagen Conservatory with . Hartmann and Holger Simon Paulli. In 1866, he became the director of the new Copenhagen Academy of Music, where for many years he taught composition and music history. Niels Gade is considered the most important Danish musician of his day. His orchestral music includes eight symphonies, a Violin Concerto, several concert overtures, and the evocative A Summers Day in the Country five pieces for orchestra. His chamber music includes the mature String Quartet in D, two string quintets, a String Sextet and String Octet, the Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano, and three violin sonatas.
