The First and Last is a live album released by the once-only supergroup band New Race. The First and Last is a collection of recordings from the various shows the band played along the East Coast of Australia in 1981. New Race contained members of the band Radio Birdman: Deniz Tek, Rob Younger, and Warwick Gilbert, along with guitarist from The Stooges- Ron Asheton, and MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson. Almost live LP was recorded during short 6 week Australia tour. Three shows in Sydney were tapped to be compiled in this release. Rough mixes were distributed to the band members for review. Rob Younger didn't like his recorded vocals, so he redid all the vocals in the studio for selected tracks for the album. All the Deniz Tek backing vocals was removed and redone by Clyde Bramley. While the resulting record, The First & the Last, benefits from a significant amount of in-studio sweetening backing vocals are added, guitar solos overdubbed, it's still an exciting, guitar-fueled rave-up.
