It wasn't on YouTube as far as I could find. This was the first mass-released EP by Neutral Milk Hotel. It's not really the same Neutral Milk Hotel discography of Neutral Milk Hotel, a Ruston, Louisiana-based indie rock group, consists of two studio albums, two singles, two extended plays, one compilation album, and three demos. Neutral Milk Hotel formed in 1989 as an offshoot of Milk, a high school musical project of singer-songwriter Jeff Mangum, and the band was largely a Mangum solo project in the group's earlier days. Neutral Milk Hotel leaderonly-permanent-member Jeff Mangum has more than a little Brian in him. Musically, it seems he's quite familiar with those Smile sessions, particularly in the way he can take an ounce of pretension and turn it into all manner of a kitchen sink melodrama. Everything Is is a reissue of a three-song EP from 1995, with one additional song. Like Wilson's earliest work, it offers few clues as to what would come later, and is fairly innocuous on its own. However, it certainly supports the idea that Mangum has steadily progressed, at least conceptually. It is a dreamy musical estate containing the confessional Jeff many Neutral Milk Hotel fans are so fond of and familiar with. The songs leave one swimming with childish thoughts and desires for the dandy atmosphere of them, scrumptious tunes gleefully adding another essential collectors item to the NMH catalog, and that it truly is with its myriad of different rare prints. One could call Jeff Mangum a hopeless romantic and Id agree. All in all I doubt I could ever hate the Everything Is EP despite its clear disregard for enormous potential. But the optimistic atmosphere of this is far too enveloping to keep me angry for long. All in all, Everything Is is a fun, tidy little disc that's heavy on the stream-of-consciousness lyrics rain is a perfectly sculpted garden of wetness, and bears more than a passing resemblance to Beck's Stereopathetic Soul Manure.
