Years and years ago when I joined Discogs a made a comment or a review of this record. It wasn’t a long text wise, it wasn’t complicated or too hard to understand. I then later some time ago deleted the text because as a review it was too short and simple. I’m now rewriting it but the message is still the same after all these years. This record is pure quality and even feels on some level a bit personal record. Most importantly, I rank this as one as best EPs in my collection (note, this is a real EP, not like some fake two track record as an EP which really aren’t EPs to begin with).

Mr. G fans know that several songs were already published on his Phoenix G label earlier, ‘11/8/99 EP’ and ‘Sex Beats EP’. With a bigger label like Defected and better distribution Mr. G’s productions became more available to new music lovers – like me. I remember back then some cynics mumbling about Mr. McBean releasing material on a commercial house label such as Defected but screw that.

The original version of ‘Lightz’ released on Phoenix G wasn’t outstanding production. It was the ‘G Out Dub’ that really took the song to another level. The song itself featured elements which can be heard on several Mr. G productions but with ‘Lightz (G Out Dub)’ he just managed to get everything right. His trademark hi hats, killer rhythm guitar loop, the high hitting notes laid out on a perfect drum programming. Is it house? Is it techno? Nah, I don’t care. It’s Mr. G. He’s always been the master to maneuver between different styles of house and techno. The ‘2001 Lunar Mix’ which is exclusively available here is very similar to the other version and doesn’t manage to overtake the greatness of the ‘G Out Dub’.

Even if my appreciation of ‘Lightz’ has become greater as years go by the true masterpiece on this record was and still is ‘Gladesmen’. Now when I say masterpiece I don’t mean it as this could be some stone cold techno purist’s milestone. No because ‘Gladesmen’ is honest, straight forward going, heavy drum programming techno, tech house, house whatever time capsule from the year 2001. It has long, deep, atmospheric strings or chords with sharp bleeps all built together the way only Mr. McBean can. I’ve listened to this over and over again and never get bored. He later re-used elements from ‘Gladesmen’ on his techno stomper ‘G’s Strings’ (released on Duty Free, ‘Homeward Bound EP’) which is another masterpiece in Mr. G’s production catalog.

‘Pepsi’ and ‘What, Eh, Pardon’ were both already available on Phoenix G releases but I’m so happy that they found their way onto this record. Both in they own unique style are grim and druggy tech housers that don’t sound dated at all today. ‘All U Need’ happens to be the weakest part of this superb EP. Don’t feel bad because on this record being the weakest cut still means being rather good compared to almost everything else. But to my ear ‘All U Need’ sounds a bit bland with mismatching horn loops and ineffective vocal samples.

I still remember the day I picked this one up in a record store, listened to it there, and fell in love right away. I guess the only reason that I remember that day and moment so vividly is that this is probably my most beloved EP in my collection. It is outstanding just because its musical merits, no hype or monetary value involved. I just wish that someday I’d be able to find equally great musical discoveries as this was.

Deep progressive beats from Defected as they move more tribal with the release of Mr G's 'Get it got it good EP'.

Gladesmen was hammered on Radio 1 [UK] to the point of insanity, yet still remains a quality houser.
