The Magic Flute, K. 620, is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work was premiered on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder's theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer's premature death. It finds Georg Solti in a relatively relaxed state of mind, with an excellent if not particularly famous cast, and an orchestra and chorus that any conductor would give his left arm not the one that welds the baton to work with. Lovers of the “Magic Flute” need look no further than this recording. Solti, whose reputation as a conductor largely rests on his ability to bring out the appropriate bombast in works by Mahler and Wagner, achieves the right balance of lightness and gravitas in Mozart’s final opera. Ably assisted by the Vienna Philharmonic and a cast of then largely unknown singers, Solti & Co. has created what I believe to be the definitive recording of this master work. Of course, any rendition of the “Flute” is only as good as its Queen of the Night. Many an otherwise superb performance of this opera has been derailed by a coloratura soprano unable to navigate the minefield of the Queen’s two notoriously demanding arias. Cristina Deutekom more than rises to the challenge here, and in doing so has created a Queen for the ages. She is, for my money, THE definitive Queen of the Night (she’s at least every bit the equal of Edda Moser, one of whose renditions of this role was sent into outer space on Voyager I) While the rest of this recording never quite reaches the transcendent heights of the two Deutekom arias, it’s nonetheless consistently excellent. This is largely on account of Solti, who understands that beneath the comic opera trappings of the “Flute” lie a depth and complexity that many lesser conductors either do not fully understand or are unable to draw out. Despite fairly workmanlike performances by Burrows and Lorengar in the romantic lead roles of Tamino and Pamina, the conductor manages to elicit more than a few moments of genuine beauty from them. And some of the performance in the smaller roles is truly first rate, most notably Talvela’s Sarastro and Fischer-Dieskau’s Speaker. When it comes to this particular piece of music, I know whereof I speak. I am a bona fide “Flute” freak Since hearing this Solti recording for the first time in the early 1970’s, I have listened to (and seen live) literally scores of other performances of this opera in the hopes of finding a better rendition. More than forty years later, I’m still looking.
In this recording, Fischer-Dieskau sang the role of The Speaker (or "Das Sprecher") In terms of stage time, the Speaker is a rather small part, appearing in only one scene. However it's a scene that's widely regarded by musical historians as among the most forward-looking passages in all of Mozart's operas. Here one can hear Mozart moving toward a conception of opera as a continuous musical/dramatic whole and away from the traditional divisions of formal arias, ensembles, and recitatif. This, of course, anticipated many of the changes that would not become commonplace in opera until the end of the 19th century, nearly one hundred years later. The whole scene occurs towards the end of Act 1, when Tamino approaches Sarastro's temple in search of Pamina. There he meets Sarastro's head priest (aka The Speaker) at which point the two engage in a lengthy musical dialogue which is closer to what one might hear in a Wagner opera rather than anything that had been written by Mozart until then. As such there are no arias (which is why you were unable to find one) Yet when Fischer-Dieskau concludes their dialogue by singing Sobald dich führt der Freundschaft Hand In's Heiligtum Zum ew'gen Band, and Tamino responds with the plaintive O ewige Nacht! Wann wirst du schwinden? Wann wird das Licht mein Auge finden? it's a total gut-punch. Although it amounts to a relatively fleeting moment in the opera as a whole, it ranks among the most transcendentally beautiful passages ever written by a composer who had no shortage of them throughout his extraordinary career.
A log time in giving a reply to your post, but are you any the wiser than me in being able to identify exactly where/what aria(s) Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is performing in this set? His name appears of the Lp box front billing and on the label of Side 3 in your photos, but nowhere else in modern downloads or online??? (I've checked various sites - Decca's doesn't list this rec. at all at present.) In general, this is one of my preferred choices for the opera, certainly the recording I grew up with and one I return to often. Although I only own this now as a flac download, maybe the Lp box notes are clearer?
