Roll Away the Stone is a single released by English rock band Mott the Hoople, recorded before Mick Ralphs left the band. The song was written by Ian Hunter and released on the CBS label. In this version Ralphs plays lead guitar and one of the Thunderthighs handles the bridge voice. It was re-recorded by the band for their 1974 album The Hoople, with Ariel Bender on lead guitar and English vocalist Lynsey de Paul singing the vocal bridge. Ian Hunter revealed the story behind the song in an interview. The Golden Age Of Rock 'n' Roll: The 40th Anniversary Collection - Mott The Hoople. Roll Away The Stones main riff bore a passing resemblance to The Beatles While My Guitar Gently Weeps. But, as Motts then-guitarist Mick Ralphs offers: Any similarity to anything else was purely accidental. I just played the song as I felt it. Like anything Ive recorded or played on, I just got into the feel and mood of the song. I never plan or work anything out, although I did have to come up with the guitar hook in the intro, as I did with All The Young Dudes. Mott the Hoople was fantastically talented at only three months old, when this album was recorded last July. I understand that they are presently recording their second. Atlantic seems to have this funny habit of sitting on albums they have rights to - I wont embarrass them by telling you how long they sat on Fresh Cream - and they delayed this album for well over six months. Lets hope that Mott the Hoople can keep up the good work and that Atlantic will let us know if they can a little sooner. Popular on Rolling Stone. In This Article: Mott the Hoople.
