The opening track, Cern, already combines a driving rhythm with some deep and dark textures, while Linear is as alinear as you can get, delving into abstraction. Tetris is similarly challenging. This album epitomizes what dark IDM and dub music should be. Momentum somehow encompasses many styles within this genre from glitch to minimal dub and still sounds like one coherent work. So many artists flake out or sell out as they get further down their career path. Monolake still stands strong, reinventing their approach, but maintaining their style. Momentum, Monolake's fifth album, will unfortunately fall victim to this shortsightedness. Admittedly, it's not as groundbreaking or as crushing as the early singles collected on Hongkong - though it's easily the most accomplished and bracing release that had come since then. One of the weakest Monolake releases. The only tracks i enjoyed were Cern, Excentric and Linear. The others feel really boring and repetitive, even for an ambient-ish release. 8mo. I think Momentum represents real progress in terms of Monolake's musicianship.
