It was released in June 1975 as the title track from his third album, and was his final single from GRC Records. The song casts Bandy as himself in the title role, a rodeo. Bandy the Rodeo Clown. Much of this is, of course, telegraphed in the title track, written by Lefty Frizzell and Sanger Shafer, which literally casts Moe Bandy as a clown who laughs through the tears, but the music also reflects a shift toward lighter material.
