Miroslav Vitouš Group is an album by Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš recorded in 1980 and released on the ECM label. The All About Jazz review by John Kelman gives the album 5 starts, Miroslav Vitous Group is unequivocally a jazz record, but one whose multifarious stylistic touchstones also makes it a long overdue release that is, indeed, informed by all kinds of music. And it's good, too-exceptionally good, in fact. Titled simply Miroslav Vitous Group, this album literally begs consideration of the group itself, which on paper seems kind of strange. Vitous would be remembered as an early fusion jazz pioneer and something of a bass virtuoso. John Surman on the whole is a tough-minded saxophonist, and in the case of this album, his appearances often help the group shift into a more interesting direction. Pianist Kenny Kirkland adds the kind of prettiness this label's honcho adores. Drummer Jon Christensen comes along on many sessions on this label, often creating an impression as the world's quiet. Bass player, educator, composer, arranger and producer, and founding member of Weather Report. This bass has been in Miroslavs possession for well over 40 years, and was used on virtually all the Weather Report albums, and Miroslavs ECM recordings as well. They're all important, but 1981's Miroslav Vitous Group stands out as one of the most significant, completing, as it does-and more than three decades after the fact-the Czech bassist's early '80s triptych that began with 1980's First Meeting and ended with 1983's Journey's End.
