Gold as Heart
The exciting contender against this version will for most be the MFSL cut and Ill be comparing them both.
What I find most brilliant about Grundmans work is his ability to push out performances into the room very effectively. Presence on his masterings are often top notch and this Classic version is no exception.
Soundwise its very crisp, clear and realistic. If I had to guess the most realistic portrayal of this album that there is. But there is one issue with it that holds it back, that being the very sharp instruments at play here. I found that some of Miles notes on The Pan Piper in particular were so hot and air cutting that I wanted to turn down the volume. This happens a few times across the album and it may have something to do with Classic cutting equipment which Ive heard can be a bit harsh in the high end.
On the other hand we have the MFSL pressing which is a bit more low end leaning as Krieg usually likes to master. While some critique his work on the Kind of Blue MFSL, here it may be a saving grace for those intense instrumentals.
Indeed, It is much more pleasant to listen to, but I find it to be losing out on that presence and realism compared to the Classic, opting instead for a more recessed and deep soundstage with slightly muffled performances. It does allow for more volume cranking however which may work favorably for some.
Its hard to say objectively which is the better version, it comes down very much to preference in this case.
Personally Id have to edge it for the Classic since I love the intimate sound, even if its possibly more compressed, but Ill probably keep the MFSL too for when I want a more relaxed and spacious listen.
