In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete, also called The Complete Blackhawk, is a 2003 four-disc collection of the 1961 live performances of the Miles Davis Quintet at the Black Hawk nightclub in San Francisco. These sets, performed with recording in mind, forged new ground for jazz musician Miles Davis, who had never previously been recorded live in a club with his combo. The Legacy imprint's issuance of the complete performances of the Miles Davis Quintet at San Francisco's infamous Blackhawk in April of 1961 sets straight a very confusing record once and for all. The individual nights have been available in many different configurations over the decades, first as LPs, and in even weirder ones on CD. For this second evening at the Blackhawk, Miles rhythm section merits attention: Imperial in its function but verging on a routine that Miles abhorred, it provided him with a highly active comfort zone in which he could combine versatility and edginess. And if in certain pieces such as Well You Neednt and Walkin the rhythm section takes a neutral stance, it-especially Wynton Kelly-answers the trumpet with enormous vitality and intensity. One also notes in these two pieces the recurrent recourse to a form used by Miles since 1958.
