Album
Filles de Kilimanjaro French for Girls of Kilimanjaro is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. It was recorded in June and September 1968, and released on Columbia Records. It was released in the United Kingdom by the company's subsidiary Columbia CBS in 1968 and in the United States during February 1969. The album is a transitional work for Davis, who was shifting stylistically from acoustic recordings with his second great quintet to his electric period. Filles de. In September, when the album was almost finished, Chick Corea and Dave Holland replaced Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter. James Browns Cold Sweat inspired Frelon Brun, and Mademoiselle Mabry originated in the first notes of Jimi Hendrixs And The Wind Cries Mary. Since it's billed as Directions in Music by Miles Davis, it should come as little surprise that Filles de Kilimanjaro is the beginning of a new phase for Miles, the place that he begins to dive headfirst into jazz-rock fusion. Influenced by James Brown's funk, the trumpeter found a new groove for Frelon Brun Brown Hornet, while Ron Carters bass and Herbie Hancocks keyboard both electrify the sultry Tout de Suite. But the elegant feel of the tunes opening isnt far from Miles past ballads, making the album an intriguing look at multiple aspects of his approach. Filles De Kilimanjaro, although under the Miles Davis name, puts Miles Davis in a much more secondary role. All the way through, Filles de Kilimanjaro is a full out enjoyable listen, showcasing enough variety and virtuosity to not make the 70-minute album a tiring listen. Petits Machins showcases the best ability of each member of the band, arguably the best on the album although the shortest. A more uptempo and fiery the song, it is a welcome shorter listen after the epic Tout De Suite. Filles de Kilimanjaro. Released 1968. Filles de Kilimanjaro Tracklist. Frelon brun Lyrics. Performed by the quintet of Davis, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Chick Corea on electric piano and Dave Holland on bass, Filles de Kilimanjaro was Davis' first album to incorporate the use of electronic instruments. This album presented aspects of rock and jazz as well as funk and blues. Many of the stylistic choices on this album carried over to Davis' electronic masterpiece, In A Silent Way.
