This live set from the Willisau jazz festival in 1975 represents Osborne as his fans from those days remember him, and newcomers may well be astonished by the power of an original improviser whose achievements have, by and large, slipped out of the record books. The saxophonist plays six originals here, and one cover Monk's Round Midnight, with his favourite partners: Moholo and his expat fellow South African, the late bassist Harry Miller. It's all pretty full-on, but this group in full cry could peel the paintwork, and All Night Long catches that elusive live feel as well as possible. Constantly on the boil, All Night Long is a high point in a career that was sadly only occasionally captured for posterity. The mental illness that prematurely silenced Osborne's uniquely savage delivery in the 1980s, and his eventual death from lung cancer in 2007, makes this set especially poignant and wholly compelling. Miller also appeared on the album Islands by the progressive rock band King Crimson, in 1971 as session musician. Miller died in a car crash in the Netherlands in 1983. Mike Osborne was born in Hereford and attended Wycliffe College in Gloucestershire and the Guildhall School of Music. From 1962 to 1972, Osborne belonged to the Mike Westbrook band.
