A cursory listen to Arular makes one wonder how it could generate so much heated, in-depth talk, as it did well before its official release. This is very direct and physical party music, with lots of slang-filled phrasings that might not have any more meaning than The roof is on fire or Dizzouble dizzutch to Americans. While this album doesn't bang as hard as Kala, . s debut is crunchy and impressive. This album feels 'global,' which is a term I don't love when applied to music because it is overused and doesn't say much. Where some albums feel timeless but rooted in a location, Arular is an object of the 2000s that feels aware of the growing connectivity of world cultures and has no single origin or cultural influence. The effect is phenomenal, with each song feeling unique and exciting. The whole. read more. Malodor
M.I.A., on her debut, ARULAR, manages to merge party-rocking beats with a distinct political message, a combination that sets her head-and-shoulders above her competitors. Her peculiar British/Sri Lankan accent brings a rhythmic purr to her lyrics: “Pull Up the People” manages to mix bass-heavy grime with an embedded consciousness-raising message. Elsewhere her lyrics are more straightforward, like the anti-sex-trade tirade of “10 Dollar” or the ode to her refugee status, “Sunshower.” Certainly much of the credit belongs to her able producers, but her staccato delivery carries the album past its less successful tracks. I defy anyone to listen to “Amazon” and not immediately want to get on the floor; it’s the funkiest track about kidnapping ever made. M.I.A. may be the most heavily hyped act of 2005, but in this case, it’s well-deserved.
