I posted this video solely so you can enjoy this album in entirety. It is worth playing over and over is Metrics fifth album, released in 2012. On the themes and title of the album, Haines has said in this interview: ELLE: You mentioned on your website that this album is about what is real versus what is artificial. What exactly did you mean by that EH: The name Synthetica is an idea that I had tossed around for a long time in my writing. Its sort of almost this character, this sort of nightmarish person that we would all recognize, where you ask yourself, Is that person actually still human Or have they eliminated all their flaws to the point of being sort of a robot . Throughout Synthetica, an undertow of dystopian unease drags the music away from standard pop territory into darker areas. There's the nihilist overdrive of Speed the Collapse, the replicant suspicions of Synthetica, and the plight of Dreams So Real, whose protagonist is haunted by the undead, yet remains resolutely jaded: The scream becomes a yawn. There's a Suzanne Vega-ish flavour to Emily Haines's voice which casts its own shadow over some tracks but even when plumbing the depths, Metric's pop charm seeps through in track. Emily Haines spends much of Metric's fifth album pondering the way the human mind is transformed by artificial versions of natural experiences. She also duets with Lou Reed. That album perfectly took their usual tuneful blend of hooky new wave and spooky synth pop and blew it up to stadium-huge levels while adding more emotional content than ever before. It was a trick that seemed so improbable in the first place that it would be crazy for the group not to try re-creating it on Synthetica. So they did. Album 2012 11 Songs. Speed the Collapse presents an unfolding drama driven by nervous-sounding drumming The Wanderlust perfectly contrasts Emily Haines sweet singing with the legendarily unflappable delivery of guest duet partner Lou Reed. Metric Synthetica Album review. 19 June 2012. Synthetica may be Metrics most impressive effort to date. Amongst its tales of confusion and love gone awry, it is a dramatic and skilfully put together record. This introspective collection strips things down when it needs to, creating tracks which are organic and sparsely beautiful. However, track Youth without Youth gets wearisome quickly, prompting an unpromising start to the album. The stodgy guitar sounds turgid and weighs down the melody. Big echoing drum claps and glacial soundscapes provide the backdrop for the monotonous vocals that howl over glittering stabs of icy synth
