He is best known for writing the book, music, and lyrics for the 1957 hit Broadway musical The Music Man. He wrote two other Broadway musicals and composed symphonies and popular songs. He was twice nominated for Academy Awards for film scores. The cast recording of The Music Man won the first Grammy Award given for best cast album. The major casting change was the substitution of Shirley Jones, who had a box-office track record, for Barbara Cook, who did not, in the role of Marian the librarian. Cook may have been preferable, but Jones handled the part well, too. You also get a huge Hollywood orchestra and chorus under the musical direction of Ray Heindorf One of the best movie musicals ever made. In light of all the hit Broadway musicals that have stumbled in their translation to the big screen, The Music Man stands out as an exception it is one of the best-loved movie musicals of all time.
