Carnaval, Op. 9, is a work by Robert Schumann for piano solo, written in 18341835 and subtitled Scènes mignonnes sur quatre notes Little Scenes on Four Notes. It consists of 21 short pieces representing masked revelers at Carnival, a festival before Lent. Schumann gives musical expression to himself, his friends and colleagues, and characters from improvised Italian comedy commedia dell'arte. He dedicated the work to the violinist Karol Lipiński. Eric Heidsieck. Variations 1-15. Ludwig van Beethoven. Finale: alla fuga. The Carnaval is one of Schumanns best-known works for solo piano. It is a set of short character pieces brought together under a common theme indicated by the pieces tile, Carnaval. Schumanns title does not refer to the modern carnival, however, but rather to a European-style grand ball. In his mind, Schumann imagined the people, situations, moods and dances that one might encounter at such a festival and, from those impressions, created the individual movements of the Carnaval.
