Album
Certainly, by 1962 others had employed the modes and feel of the church into jazz, but Williams' use of the Ray Charles Singers no relation to the other Ray Charles added an element that made St. Martin, an a cappella choral piece, a much more church-oriented affair than, say, John Coltrane's Spiritual. Williams' vision, like Coltrane's, was at times dark and sobering while at others full of warmth and hope. Mary Lou Williams, the First Lady of Jazz, was an extraordinary pianist, composer, arranger, and master of blues, boogie woogie, stride, swing, and be-bop. Williams complex harmonies and brilliant phrasing, rooted in spirituals and blues, border on the avant-garde. Black Christ is both a powerful secular statement and a call to the divine. Duke Ellington said, beyond category-a pianist who sums up in herself the full essence of jazz and expresses it with skill and perception that few other jazz musicians have even approached. Try it Black Christ of the Andes, Williams - a parent of Kansas City Swing and bebop and no stranger to invention - once again created something unique: An avant-garde jazz mass, complete with her signature swinging style. Williams was well known for her commitment to giving back, too. In the late 1950s, she set up thrift stores in Harlem to raise money for musicians who had fallen on hard times - and she also committed to contributing 10 percent of all her own earnings to the cause. After the recording of Black Christ of the Andes was released in 1964, Williams started distributing a one-page handout titled Jazz for the Soul at her performances. 2017 г.
