An Evening With Marlene Dietrich is a concert-format television special, starring Marlene Dietrich, first broadcast in 1973. Alexander H. Cohen, who had produced Dietrich's successful Broadway runs of her one-woman show in 1967 and 1968, suggested a television version of her show. Dietrich would receive a fee of 250,000 for her participation in the project. It was said at the time that this was the highest one-shot fee ever paid to a performer to appear on television. Marie Magdelene Dietrich von Losch aka Marlene was born in Schöneberg bei Berlin, Germany on December 27, 1901. Her father was an army officer who had served in the Franco-Prussian War. Because of his constant absences due to his army duties, Marlene and the family had to rely on themselves. After he died, while she was 11, Marlene's mother married Eduard von Losch and he adopted the Dietrich children. I never liked Marlene Dietrich, mainly due to her image, her films, and her acting style. But when I first came across this show in the middle 1980's, when I was in my early twenties, and being a sucker for old songs, old films, musicals and show stopping numbers, I thought I would give it a go. I recorded it and was mesmerised by her presence, yes of course she hasn't got a great voice but there is something about the passion, emotion and the feel that she brings to the songs that negate her lack of singing talent, obviously some of this style would be out of place today .
