Del Monaco was born in Florence, into a musical upper-class family, to a Neapolitan father and to a mother of Sicilian descent. As a young boy he studied the violin but had a passion for singing. He graduated from the Rossini Conservatory at Pesaro, where he first met and sang with Renata Tebaldi, with whom he would form something of an operatic dream team of the 1950s. His early mentors as a singer included Arturo. Del Monaco recorded a number of recital albums for Decca during his recording career and this Original Masters set - the first DeccaPhilips set to be devoted to a vocalist - features several of them made between 1952-1969, in a variety of music that ranges from opera to Italian songs and in roles both familiar and unfamiliar. In the theater, as another reviewer here says rightly, a crooning falsetto that a conductor may demand in the studio will not be heard although a well-placed and supported pp, such as those for which Chaliapin was famous, will . But this is more like a boxing match than music making, with the listener the tenor's sparring partner.
