In the best sense of the word, this is an unsettling alternative rock record, throwing curveballs from start to finish: lurching blues-rock, weird cabaret vamps, goth-rock leavened by imaginative horn and string arrangements. Marie Ell's lyrics are not the cheeriest things around, but they have a poetic sensibility that avoids nonstop darkness. Her voice will be an acquired taste for some, but it too stretches in imaginative ways, and will likely find favor with fans of Marianne Faithfull, Nico, and Nina Hagen. Wildwood Flower is the last solo album from June Carter Cash. It was released in 2003 on the Dualtone record label, four months after her death and only a few days before the death of Johnny Cash, who provides backing vocals, making this the final release of his lifetime. It was produced by their son, John Carter Cash.
