Music Box is the fourth album and third studio album by American singer Mariah Carey, released in the United States on August 31 1993 by Columbia Records. Carey co-wrote and co-produced all of the tracks on the album, her co-writersproducers being Walter Afanasieff, Clivilles & Cole, and Babyface. It is largely composed of ballads such as Hero and Anytime You Need a Friend, with a few up-tempo songs including Now That I Know and I've Been Thinking About You. Carey was nominated for Grammy. The songs, most of which were co-written by Carey, feature a lot of lyrics focused on love as a form of escape, as on the albums two biggest hits, the tellingly-titled Dreamlover and Hero. Elsewhere she touches on the various stages of longing and heartbreak, including a cover of the tearjerker Without You, which was a huge hit for Harry Nilsson in 1971. Mariah Carey has been stung by critical charges that she's all vocal bombast and no subtlety, soul, or shading. Her solution was to make an album in which her celebrated octave-leaping voice would be downplayed and she could demonstrate her ability to sing softly and coolly.
