Collegium Musicum is a Slovak art rock, progressive rock band formed by Marián Varga and Fedor Frešo in Czechoslovakia in late 1969, best known for their complex, predominantly instrumental compositions centred around Varga's keyboardsorgan, and for their interpretations of classical works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, Bartók, and others. While never achieving mainstream popularity, the band was among the most influential formations on the CzechSlovak music scene in the 1970s, drawing comparisons. Marian Varga. Collegium Musicum biography Founded in Bratislava, Slovakia in 1969 - Disbanded in 1981 - Reunited thru the 90's and again in 2008. This band was active from 1971 until 1981 with six releases plus one live album. Their style is similar to Emerson Lake & Palmer, Rick Wakeman, and The Nice. There are clear Classical influences. Marian Varga is a classical musician - and composer - who also dabbled into ELP like symphonic prog and fusion. On Divergencie, most of the musician is orchestral classic music with full 100 men orchestra though with some jazz and poprock inbetween. Featured items. Marián Varga January 29, 1947 August 9, 2017 was a Slovak musician, composer and organist. He played the piano from the age of six. He studied piano and composition at the conservatory in Bratislava. He left the conservatory after three years to become a member of the group Prúdy, and contributed to the legendary album Zvoňte zvonky. He left Prúdy as suddenly as he had left conservatory only to establish the first Czechoslovak art rock band Collegium Musicum
