Enclosed was the title of Magic's debut album released in 1969, and this Gear Fab reissue by the same name includes the entirety of that debut, but also adds a 1968 single from the original lineup and songs from the 1971 sessions on Motown imprint Rare Earth that culminated in their second self-titled album, so it really can be considered the. While flying under the banner of psychedelic music, Magic is anything but, with the opening tracks taking on that funky swamp rock feeling that the Doobie Brothers would later make famous, though Enclosed is certainly not that good.

Enclosed is divided into two sections, with side A being injected with more gritty guitar work, along with vocals to match, while side B has a laid back vibe filled with dreamy tender ballads of sorts that are insanely short for this period of time, and do not showcase [though they do make an attempt] much of anything instrumentally. In all honesty, I was expecting far more than what was delivered, as the songs sound unfinished, with loose ends that need tightening up, and the body of the songs to be fleshed out with more density, layering and musical visions.

That being said, there are many who find this album enchanting, sliding it in with groups such as Rare Earth, claiming the songs sound like southern soul classics. People seriously wanted this band to be so much more than they were, and I remember one music critic writing that, ” … their music sounds like it was concocted under the influence of some of Mr. Owsley’s patent medicines,” which was certainly not the case, though to their credit, they did manage to work with Stevie Wonder, who must have been taken with their Stax infused rhythms and inspirations. Another critic wrote that, ” … the rhythm section consistently locks into a transcendent grove, filled with fabulous guitar work,” and then goes on to say, ”It is surprising that Magic never quite found a wider audience.” Well kids, there’s a reason for that, the band just wasn’t that good, no matter how much praise one heaps on them, they never had the chops to be anything more than what they were.

Enclosed is very much an album in and of its time, though with music of this style being and having been done far better, it causes me pause when a friend pulls this bit of wax out of it’s jacket like it’s the holy grail, gently lowers the tonearm, and I’m forced to smile, pretending not to recognize the ambivalence of the music for fear of hurting a friendship.

*** What makes this album so desirable is the fact that the original pressing was done by the Armadillo Label in 1969, is quiet rare, and commands prices hovering around $900 … of course this is all about the two camps, those who love the music, and those who do nothing but collect and flip the records, making them nothing but a commodity.
