It was released as the lead single from Madonna's third studio album True Blue 1986 on March 26, 1986 by Sire Records. Originally composed by Patrick Leonard for the score of the film Fire with Fire, the instrumental was shown to Madonna, who decided to use it for then-husband Sean Penn's film At Close Range. Live to Tell is a song by Madonna from her third studio album True Blue. It was released as the lead single of the album on March 26, 1986. The track was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard. This was written for the movie At Close Range, starring Sean Penn, who Madonna was married to at the time. In 2004, Penn won an Oscar for his role in Mystic River. To this date, Madonna has never won an Oscar, not even for Swept Away. In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna said.
