The Concerto for Cello and Orchestra is a cello concerto by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. The work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society with support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It received its world premiere at the Royal Festival Hall on October 14, 1970 by the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich to whom the piece is dedicated and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Edward Downes. LUTOSLAWSKI CONDUCTS LUTOSLAWSKI has three recordings, the CELLO CONCERTO, DANCE PRELUDES, and CONCERTO FOR OBOE, HARP, AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA. The orchestra is Symphonie-Orchester Des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and the recording is from January 1986. Don't worry, even though the Cello Concerto was recorded live, there is not any of that dad-blasted, inappropriate applause that you find at the end of other classical music that is recorded live. This performance is one of several available recordings, and acquits itself well. The brief first movement begins with an aleatoric swarm of strings, an effect that repeats a few times with diminishing intensity.
