Reflections of a Golden Dream is the last LP Lonnie Liston Smith cut for Flying Dutchman and it's hard not to see the record as an aural manifestation of the label's shifting fortunes. As the jazz marketplace shifted during the '70s, the label had its financial hand forced and they needed to abandon their esoteric ways for something that was a bit more commercial. Of all their artists, Smith was the best positioned to do this because he already struck upon a blend of the spiritual and funk with 1975's Expansions. Reflections of a Golden Dream is an album by keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith, featuring performances recorded in 1976 and released by the Flying Dutchman label the following year. Released a year later, Reflections of a Golden Dream tips the scales a bit closer to funk. Fifth Cosmic Echoes album, and my first vinyl exposure along with Renaissance to SLSs musical realm during my teen years in the late 70s, its taken me about three decades to reassess this album, after having rejected it due to the disco I hated so much then. One of the things that had pushed me to investigate towards these two albums were the very prog artworks of Golden Dream and Renaissance, but I was soon to find out that this artwork-approach was definitely not an exact science.
