This one, dedicated to the recently passed New York musician Hajji Majer, looks to be a more melodic work informed by Van Hoen's love of '70s electronic mu. After the Rain is the latest offering from Mark Van Hoen and Louis Sherman's Locust project. Following up the 2013 release You'll Be Safe Together EMEGO 162CDLP, this new album sees Locust stepping away from the abstracted forms of previous works, presenting a more melodicharmonic proposition. Bathed in a warm nostalgic memory, After the Rain draws on Mark's formative influences, primarily '70s electronic music. I did listen to this album after the rain, a summer rain, trying to figure out if the sad, ambient mix would match the emotional humidity of the soul, concluding that there is a match, a slight one, enough to make the test worthy. Not only did Locust's After the Rain arrive so quickly after You'll Be Safe Forever, it's a huge improvement over its predecessor as well. Together with his partner Louis Sherman, Van Hoen has used the Locust name to once again give electronic music the multi-dimensional shading for which the genre ought to be known. While it's not entirely clear if After the Rain is a concept album, the twelve pieces do seem to have a common thread not one that tells you a story but one that shows you the beginning, middle, and end of a stroll through a garden.
