The Listening is the debut studio album by Canadian recording artist Lights. It was released on September 22, 2009 by Sire Records, with global distribution handled by parent Warner Music Group, although in Lights' native Canada the album is released instead by Universal Music Canada under licence. The Listening is the debut studio album released by Canadian musician Lights. It was released on September 22, 2009 following her self-titled debut extended play. Four of the six songs from the EP are featured on this album. The first song that Lights wrote from this album was February Air. She wrote it as she was trying to discover what sound worked best for her. After moving to Toronto, Canada, Lights continued to focus on her music and began to be influenced by comic books. She began performing. Lights' full-length debut The Listening finds vocalistsongwriter Valerie Poxleitner delivering a steady flow of gentle indie-electronic alt-rock that showcases her sweet voice. Bringing to mind a more subdued Cyndi Lauper, Lights' music leans heavily toward melodic and catchy midtempo anthems that percolate and chirp with keyboards, beats, and light electric guitar accents. In that sense, Lights sounds something along the lines of a Daft Punk-junior dorm room chanteuse. Lightss debut album, The Listening, comes only a year after her successful Lights EP, which boasted a small collection of dreamy and catchy synthpop. Fans of Lightss will be excited to know that The Listening is more of the same, but that proves to be both a good and a bad thing. Its pretty hard to deny the talent that Lights has to produce a catchy pop song. Every song on this album has something infectious about it, and whether it is Lightss terrific voice, the catchy hooks that are embedded into every chorus, or the layers of subtle sounds churning in the background, youll find yoursel.
