Leopold Anthony Stokowski 18 April 1882 13 September 1977 was an English conductor of Polish descent. One of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and his appearance in the Disney film Fantasia. He was especially noted for his free-hand conducting style that spurned the traditional baton and for obtaining a characteristically sumptuous sound from the orchestras he directed. I present to you Leopold Stokowski & The Philadelphia Orchestra's playing of Paul Dukas symphonic poem. From the 1940 Walt Disney masterpiece, Strokowski's 1940 recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra for the movie Fantasia were landmarks on several counts. Apart from his reputation as a fiercely independent musical personality, Stokowski was also a showman with very few peers, and his careful yet extroverted performances of these pieces including Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and the summary of Beethoven's Pastorale Symphony introduced many listeners not blessed with classical music educations to these pieces for the first time. As the film wasn't a success on its initial release, there weren't millions of such listeners, but at least many tens of thousands
