His solo work lacked originality, true, but the Cimarron Boys were an excellent band who played tight and sparkly, with excellent engineering at the sessions. McAuliffe played down-home hillbilly stompers like Boil 'Em Cabbage Down, but his other specialty was smooth big band jazz, and it can be argued that McAuliffe came closer to that realm of popular music than any other Western swing band. This disc has some of both, and plenty in between. It also happens to be the only available collection of McAuliffe's solo work on compact disc. William Leon McAuliffe January 3, 1917 August 20, 1988 was an American Western swing guitarist who was a member of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys during the 1930s. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of that band. When he was sixteen he was a member of the Light Crust Doughboys, playing both rhythm guitar and steel guitar. In 1935, at age 18, he played with Bob Wills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
