Last Night on Earth is the tenth studio album by the American alternative rock musician Lee Ranaldo, released on October 7, 2013 on Matador Records. Recorded over a nine-month period at Echo Canyon West in Hoboken, New Jersey, the album features Ranaldo's backing band The Dust which comprises former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley, guitarist Alan Licht and bassist Tim Lüntzel. Throughout Last Night on Earth, he and the Dust achieve an alchemy where experimental rock, classic rock, and even hints of prog sound made for each other. All of this is especially true of Ambulancer, one of the album's more urgent tracks. While its searing guitar work has roots in Ranaldo's Sonic Youth days, its acoustic flourishes feel more modern as well as timeless. Lee Ranaldos latest collection is a full-band companion piece to last year's solo record, Between the Times and the Tides. He's joined on it by a Grateful Dead-inspired backing band featuring Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and avant-garde journeymen Alan Licht and Tim Lüntzel. While Last Night on Earth has been billed as more of a cohesive bands vision, it still suffers from a similar blurry schizophrenia. The Grateful Dead and other psychedelic troupes surely inform Last Night-many tunes clock in at over seven minutes and the closer Blackt Out , is just a click under 12-but often Ranaldo calls his past into the fray, forming a conflict. By way of example, this renaissance man recently premiered a work for strings based on his first-hand, terrifying experience of Hurricane Sandy. The same traumatic ordeal informs much on this new record, indeed the songs began life on an acoustic guitar as Lee and his family endured a week without basic comforts in their Manhattan home. All told, its a terrific album. Lee and the Dust play a couple of UK dates in November and on this evidence they should be great shows.
