Ellen Muriel Deason August 30, 1919 July 16, 2012, known professionally as Kitty Wells, was an American pioneering female country music singer. She broke down a female barrier in country music with her 1952 hit recording It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels, which also made her the first female country singer to top the U. country charts and turned her into the first female country superstar. It Wasnt God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels would also be her first of several pop crossover hits. The Kitty Wells Story was the first vinyl collection of Kitty's biggest hits It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels, Paying for That Back Street Affair, Whose Shoulder Will You Cry On, Makin' Believe and it remains a strong compilation. Not all of her biggest hits are present on the set and it was later replaced with stronger collections, but the compilation remains entertaining and it has a couple of gems that never found their way onto any other set with the notable exception, of course, of Bear Family's gigantic, multi.
