Original Soundtrack. Jóhann Jóhannsson draws the title of his latest album from the book, and this is the music he composed for the film's soundtrack. There's quite a bit of extra material- the album is a full 15 minutes longer than the film- but there's really no padding. As a recording, the album displays a few sides of Jóhannsson we haven't heard before. Among his albums to date, it's one of the most musically active, and befitting its origin, also the most soundtrack-y, which means something for a guy working in a genre frequently referred to as cinematic. As always, Jóhannsson conveys these shifts in mood effortlessly but with great nuance. The albums most hopeless moments, such as the almost weeping soprano vocals on City Building Alt. Version and the vast bleakness of Escape, come before the sunrise of Inside the Pods strings and End Theme s wide-open joy, but it feels far from clichéd. An accompaniment to the animated film Varmints , this is a collection of achingly beautiful orchestral work balanced on a bed of Jóhannssons patented electronics. Surprisingly however, the film itself is not intrinsic to the enjoyment of the music Jóhannssons score stands alone perfectly as a haunting collection of tracks. As with most soundtracks, the album is made up of a selection of repeating themes which appear and disappear throughout the record Jóhannsson manages to approach this with such subtlety you canât always even tell that a familiar theme is drifting in and out of each tra. Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson 19 September 1969 9 February 2018 was an Icelandic composer who wrote music for a wide array of media including theatre, dance, television and films. His work is stylized by its blending of traditional orchestration with contemporary electronic elements. Jóhann released solo albums from 2002 onward. In 2016, he signed with Deutsche Grammophon, through which he released his last solo album, Orphée. Some of his works in film include the original scores for Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival, and James Marsh's The Theory of Everyth read more. Album 2009 13 Songs. United States. After carefully listening to Jóhan's entire discography this morning, I have chosen this album, Bees, as his most effective musical expression of the emotive thematic passages that manifest across his output. And despite this phenomenal young composer's consistent quality and brushes with genius apparent in his every release, still Bees stands out as the best. At least IMHO. A brilliant release. It's the pauses that make this recording, after seeing him perform in Manchester many years ago, the pauses and timing improve it all. Not too keen on the Rainwater strings, they are a bit hands in the air aggressive for me. The piano played by Johannsson shines like luminescent coral in a black cave underwater. The title of the album could have been taken from any song title by Matthew Sweet. One of his best albums to listen to as a whole.

This CD was also sold at his UK shows in 2010. I bought my copy in the Grand Opera House, Leeds 29 May 2010. It was advertised then as 'Last few copies'.

This album is absolutely incredible. I picked it up on a whim without hearing any audio samples, just because I liked his IBM 1401 album so much, and this one blows everything else I've heard from him away. It is soft, powerful, romantic, sad, lonely, warm and inviting.

I buy and listen to records almost daily now, and this is by far the most listened to album I've picked up in the last two years on vinyl. It is beautiful, and should not be as overlooked as it is.

This mini album, limited to just 1000 copies, was only sold while Jóhann Jóhannsson was on his US tour. At under 37 minutes, the eleven tracks are taken from the Jóhannsson’s award-winning score for Marc Craste’s animated film Varmints. Here are gentle strings and beautiful modern classical piano arrangements wrapped in light electronic processing that Jóhannsson is known for. His 2008 release Fordlandia left many critics in standing ovation. And this short soundtrack does not disappoint. The production is top notch with a performance from City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, and beautiful ghostly vocals from Michaela Srumova. Released on NTOV Phonoautogram, this is a must have for every fan. And you’ve got to see the animation!
