On Doppelleben, his third solo album and second for Kompakt, he covers Carly Simon for the second time and juggles silly pop songs with clever dance tracks. It's more direct and of a happier demeanor compared to Was Ist Musik, tipped off by the difference between the photos on the sleeves: on the back of the earlier album, a blurry black-and-white Köhncke glances downward, while Köhncke's piercing blue eyes are featured on the front here. I'm pretty neutral about it, so Justus Köhncke's DOPPELLEBEN actually sounds fine to me. Opening with the beatless Elan Dub, the album doesn't show its pop hand until Schwabylon, which has more of a lounge feel than anything. The start-stop samples and mellow folk guitar of Wo Bist Du back up Köhncke's slight, wavering voice as it builds to a symphonic chorus. Loreley has an almost ethnic rhythm and a mournful cello, and the deep and ambient Mu Arae has a sate. You can tell that he went into Doppelleben without any real mandate because each track just sort of floats from one convention to the next, but rather than sounding like a disparate batch of songs, the end result is like a love note to his favorite music from the past 20 years. Fittingly, the best two tracks here prove Köhncke to be as adept at the vocal-pop stuff as he is at the Kompakt nerd stuff
