On September 9, 1965 Julian Carrillo, the composer and music theoretician, passed away in Mexico City. He was born in Ahualulco (San Luis Potosí), on 28th January 1875. In 1895 he was a student of the National Conservatoire of Mexico, and subsequently won a scholarship to study in Europe. Upon his return to Mexico, Julian Carrillo held the most eminent positions in the musical domain: Inspector General of Music, Director of the National Symphony Orchestra (on two occasions), Director of the Conservatoire, where he directed the courses of composition as a violinist. The musical system that has been practiced until now in the West, the nature of it, is based on a scale composed of twelve different notes that is repeated at each octave. The 13 Sonido is a system which divides the octave into more than twelve sounds (16, 32, etc.) thereby expanding the number of existing notes. Ivan Wischnegradsky, referring to Julian Carrillo wrote: "What attracted me particularly to him, was that having started down the path of the ultra-chromatic since his youth, he remained faithful to it until his death. Within that field he also displayed an extraordinary wit and inventiveness (skills which were never lost, right up to the end) to give practical solutions to any obstacles, such as building new instruments or inventing another way of writing music."
