A fine piece of noise from one of LA’s most prominent figures in the genre. Although this CD was recorded live, it is impossible to tell. The sound quality is crisp and clear, there are no moments where the audience can be heard, and the music has the same cut-and-paste collage style of Wiese’s studio projects. Maybe it’s a bit less frenetic than certain moments off of “Soft Punk”, but you can still feel the energy. It rarely stays in one place for more than 10 seconds.

A wide variety of sound sources are jammed into these 5 tracks. Bursts of static, guitar strumming, field recordings, amplifier distortion, percussion of all types, vocal chops, ambient waves, key jingling, everything but the sax. If there are any tracks here that stand out, it’s the fourth one. It’s perhaps the quietest one of the bunch, starting out with a near-silent field recording. If you listen closely, you can hear birds and a jet plane flying by. There are also some sounds from previous tracks that reappear briefly in the closer.

The CD is also pretty short, too, at just 31 minutes. But Wiese does a LOT in that timespan. Just reread the above paragraph!

Overall, this CD is a short but sweet slice of noise collage. Perhaps not his loudest or fastest-paced, but still a solid-enough release. It’ll be interesting to see what Wiese and the remixers have done with the material here for Volumes 2 and 3.
