John Phillips John, the Wolf King of L. is the first solo recording by the Mamas & the Papas leader John Phillips. All songs were Phillips originals, dealing mostly with recent events in Phillips' life, including references to his new girlfriend Geneviève Waïte and longtime friend Ann Marshall April Anne. Phillips sure knows how to set a mood, and the infectiously mellow groove permeates his best solo record. I read in the now defunct ICE magazine that Wolfking was being reissued in the states at last by Varese but almost 18 months went by with no further word, nor did it appear on their website. Known as Papa John, Phillips was a member and leader of the singing group The Mamas & the Papas. Phillips was born in Parris Island, South Carolina. His father was a retired United States Marine Corps officer who won an Oklahoma bar from another Marine in a poker game on the way home from France after World War I.
