PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone is the ninth studio album by John Frusciante, released on September 12, 2012 in Japan, in Europe on September 24, and internationally on September 25 on Record Collection. The album was released in multiple formats, including CD, vinyl, 32-bit digital formats and cassette. Self-produced by Frusciante, the album was preceded by the EP Letur-Lefr 2012 and the free download Walls and Doors. PBX was made in 2011, it was conceived as an album, the songs having been recorded in succession. Recorded throughout 2011, the album was the result of Frusciante's dream to create electronic music, but seems like more of a synthesis of a multitude of different directions, sometimes branching out in all of these directions at once. PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone was released in 2012, and was the first solo album by John Frusciante that saw him fully embrace the influence he drew from electronic music. He had previously experimented with the genre on 2004s A Sphere In The Heart of Silence, a collaborative effort with his friend Josh Klinghoffer, who would later go on to take his place as the guitarist in the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Johns change in direction was anticipated by the release of the Letur-Lefr EP, a 5-track offering that fused together experimental rock, hip-hop, synthpop and drum and bass to create a sound.
